Many organizations use a 'suggested' membership fee, and will accept any
amount (sometimes including nothing) as the actual membership fee.
The reaction to such a scheme is often positive, it seems that if an
organization is attractive enough to join, most people will pay a
(reasonable) fee even if they are not compelled to do so.
I'm not quite ready to debate the symantics of 'fee' vs. 'donation',
though. :-)
