Congratulations, Bret.  The monkey passes to your back now.

I am not surprised that your appointment  got such narrow support.  Jamie 
was too impatient to ask the new webmaster beforehand to submit to some 
basic accountability rules.
Also the webmastering *and* webserver hosting are now again in one hand, 
which is a worry for those who care about checks and balances.

Let me enumerate the The Rules, under which a volunteer would be willing to 
serve as your successor :

1. the webmaster  will have the support of at least 7 of the 11 Panel members.
2. the webmaster will keep himself accountable to the membership by 
publishing in the Forum a monthly log of all changes made  and of the time 
spent on the changes.
3. the webmaster will request approval for changes from the Panel, in non 
-controversial cases after and in controversial cases *before* implementing 
them.
4. the webmaster will stand for a vote-of-confidence (by Panel , 
confirmed  by the members) after  6 months.
5. the webmaster will hand over control of the server to a Panel member who 
is elected by the Panel specifically for this role.

You would make a brilliant  beginning by expressing your willingness to 
serve the members under such  rules now.
