[atlarge-discuss] At-Large Consortium
Richard,
I share your view that the only way to win the At-large battle is to create a
coalition of AtLarge groups and others. This group has the potential to
become that umbrella group, but it will only be able to assume that role if
it deliberately chooses to structure itself as an organization that
represents and embodies all other At-Large organizations -- in essence, a
Consortium for At-Large associations.
A good example of this model is the World Information Technology and Services
Alliance (WITSA), a consortium of 46 information technology (IT) industry
associations from economies around the world. Such an organization has
members that are organizations (not individuals), and my hope for
icannatlarge.com was that it would not be just another among hundreds of
other user groups that were open only to individuals, but that we would have
the presence of mind to build what is truly needed -- a Supporting
Organization that accrues power through the aggregation of hundreds of
At-large organizational entities throughout the world.
There are plenty of user groups out there for individuals. Icannatlarge.com
does not need to be just another user group for individuals, it can be much,
much more. Individuals alone don't make much of an impact, neither do
businesses alone, or NGOs alone, but together... as an association they can
wield power and influence. We have no Association for the At-large other
than the bogus effort being put together as the ALAC. This icannatlarge.com
group could become that Association by crafting its bylaws in a manner that
allowed for a multitude of organizational memberships.
It can choose to be the leader of this effort to organize the At-Large, or it
can be just another player among the many others already out there. The
choice is up to the members. Think small or think big.
