Re: [atlarge-discuss] The web page
I'd obviously like votes on the bylaws eventually (following discussion
among the membership about different versions) - and I'd equally like a vote
on the method and personnel through which we intend to guide Bret (who
otherwise has an invidious position). Similarly I'd like a process agreed
for discussing various mission statements, and ultimately voting on them
(and should that be a panel vote or a membership vote?). But I'm not in a
hectic rush to see these votes addressed. The process of consultation and
the creation of choice is more important. My objection to Bret's appointment
was not to do with him as a person, but that there was no choice provided,
and inadequate opportunity for the membership as a whole to participate. For
the time being (during this Shanghai period) I don't really care too much
that we put up some provisional stuff (providing we're all clear that it IS
provisional). To be honest, the Icann show at Shanghai does not interest me
greatly - it's a bit like Saddam Hussein polling 100% of the votes this week
in his election - the outcomes are rigged in advance anyway - I think we do
well to haunt their party as the enduring ghost of the At Large - however
I'm much more interested in our own agenda and how we organise and build up
our independent identity (which has precious little to do with Icann as far
as I'm concerned). I think you're mostly too obsessed with the game you
can't win inside their corrupt little empire. They just laugh at you in your
face. They despise and marginalise a constituency they regard as
insignificant. We are the "untouchables" on the fringes of their society.
You could spend a lifetime trying to get "into" Icann and their I*society -
and you'd still be out in the corridors in the cold - because they have no
intention at all of handing over power. Therefore, sure let's vote on
bylaws, mission, web administration etc but let's do it with a proper
process and let's not get too worked up if it needs further refinement.
Shanghai is a necessary distraction. It's not the main course.
