Thank you Darryl
This proposal seems more sensible. I feel closer to accepting something
along these lines, if the membership decided it *did* want to introduce
fees.
I can see a case for introducing fees if it was used to safeguard
organisational structure. Paid up individuals would then become sort of
"Trustee Members", committing themselves to a financial commitment, and in
return taking on a role as guardians and trustees.
This would only be tenable to me, however, if there was still an open and
free membership for those who preferred that kind of participation, and they
would need to be able to participate in a number of ways - discussion,
non-binding opinion polls, and in some cases, binding votes - so they are
truly recognised and respected.
I also like the idea of giving Trustee Members a website profile, so our
organisation becomes more personalised, and we see what people look like,
what they feel about issues, and so on. But only if they *choose* to provide
a profile, of course.
I remain in favour of free membership, as things stand, because I am worried
that people will try to make fees mandatory for all and I would not support
that. But thank you, Darryl, for a suggestion which I think has some mileage
and ought to be looked at more closely.
