Hi Jan,
I agree. I'm a big fan of open working groups, but I'm an even bigger fan of
an ID verified membership. So until we reach the point that an open working
group can be run securely on a one person one vote basis, and will exclude
paid saboteurs, trust email accounts, kooks and multiple personalities, I'm
in the camp that wants to know who I'm talking to, and to whom I'm giving my
time to free of charge. There has to be a reasonable hope of progress being
made and a result that will stand up to scrutiny. That means ID Verification
comes first.
They've made a start on those challenges this last Saturday in the
Provisional Membership Committee, (when unfortunately I was absent), but I
think it's a good thing to keep going. In the meantime, it may not be
prudent to run open working groups when there are better solutions available
that bypass some (but not all) the ID verification issues, such as a
combination of regular membership polls, Panel decisions and delegated
workload to sub-Committees to share the burden.
I'll be posting something later on the work of the PMC, but waiting for
feedback from my PMC colleagues on a first draft.
