People (i.e. mob) power does not translate well to the Web, I'm afraid. 
I don't care how many members we may come up with (how many of those 
will be real people?), we cannot hope to influence the powers that be on 
the web simply through a large membership base.  Money is a necessity, 
not a luxury in this instance.  You can forget about locking arms and 
marching in solidarity if you can't have your representatives appearing 
at the crucial meetings and fora, and this takes money.  Ideals are 
simply not enough.
