Leader of `Virii' Hacker Group Sentenced

BOSTON -- A Rhode Island man was sentenced
Thursday to a year and a day in prison after
admitting that he led a nationwide
computer-hacking group known as the ``Virii.''
But at a sentencing hearing Thursday in US
District Court, Judge Patti Saris questioned
whether the Internet service disruptions and
other damages caused by 21-year-old Sean Trifero
added up to as much as $67,500, as prosecutors
claimed.
Saris also rejected a request by prosecutors that
Trifero continue to be banned from the Internet,
a setback to the government's contentions that
the group he led threatened national security
interests.
