PRIVACY ADVOCATES LEERY OF IETF PLAN
Privacy advocates are critical of a new proposal by the Internet Engineering
Task Force (IETF), an international standards group, to include the unique
serial number for each computer's network connection as a part of its
expanded new IP (Internet Protocol) address. The proposed address scheme is
called Ipv6. Critics of the proposal fear that Internet sites would
correlate these embedded serial numbers against people's names, addresses,
and other personal information, including their political opinions and
preferences. But the task force's chairman thinks the privacy concerns are
"overrated," and that the address reconfiguration scheme will not add any
new danger to a problem that already exists. (AP/San Jose Mercury News 11
