Information Society Technologies Specific Programme for Research and Technology Development (1999-2002).

Key Action III : Multimedia content & tools.

Information access, filtering, analysis and handling (IAF).

IAF is a theme in the EU's Information Society Technologies research programme. It aims to make rich multimedia content easier to use, on the Web, CD, DVD or other media. IAF focuses on access, filtering, analysis and handling techniques for images, video and sound. Applications areas include: audio-visual collections, digital video, digital music, media editing & post-production, mobile & domestic networking, VR and other areas.

The key research challenge is to find new ways to describe and represent multimedia content: firstly to make it richer and radically more attractive than today's 2D content; and secondly to make it easier to access, analyse, process and use. Digitisation alone is not enough. Advances in content management are needed to handle the semantics of an image, streamed video or sound, namely what the "1's and 0's" actually mean.

The 1999 IST Workprogramme focuses on two key aspects:

- Action Line III.5.1 : Multi-sensory forms of content, where creativity is needed to develop and design new types of "sensory-rich" content, which appeal directly to the human senses of sight, hearing, touch etc.

- Action Line III.5.2 : Media representation & access, where new coding and indexing technologies, models and standards are needed to improve access, filtering, analysis and handling of multimedia content.

Call publication date: 1st October 1999

Call deadline: 17th January 2000
