Good classic point. But in the context of representation , often debated.

What you are saying is, support should go beyond the mere vote.  A very
good point. This really means that directors need to be supported by
(small) organizations.
Then you get the potential conflict with the role of ICANN director as
defined in the bylaws.

You talk about giving up your job, and I know that's a tough call to make.
Too tough for the vagaries of political life. 
For the self-employed, (company owners and consultants) the choice come
more gradually. You find that slowly ICANN is eating up all your time and
that your income starts to suffer.

For the sake of honesty, though, I find that many ICANN list participants
are employed somewhere , but seem to have ample opportunity to take time
away from their employers. 
This is why I was impressed by Giorgio's offer to go half-time on his job.
