[atlarge-discuss] avenues other than ICANN

Dear Karl,

Yesterday I witnessed an interesting shareholders' meeting.

It was a meeting of Auckland Airport, a public company as a result of the desperate "privatizations" carried out here in NZ since the late eighties.

The meeting was attended and spoken to by a group of Greenpeace activists, who motioned to their fellow shareholders (they had purchased $400 worth of shares in order to gain that status) about the replacement of an old fashioned incineration unit on the company premises.

Of course the motion failed, but they had made a powerful point: they had spoken to hundreds of ordinary people, small shareholders, including representatives of local bodies owning shares, about concerns that were public concerns. They got TV coverage.
They were hailed for the "proper action". They got the attention of the financial market people. They certainly marked the issue for priority attention of the Board, forced to publicly acknowledge the issue.

The comparison of organizations like the IDNO and Icannatlarge.org with Greenpeace is not altogether far fetched.
Nor is a "company" like Verisign Inc. with its USG contracted monopoly so entirely different from a "privatized" public body.

Yes, I am suggesting that a small group of Verisign customers or ex-customers purchase the shares , either privately or pooled, and elect representatives to speak on the group's behalf and on public record at Verisign shareholder meetings.

Anyone interested in this approach, please contact me and if there is enough interest, we'll devote space to this approach in the Forum.
