Re: [atlarge-discuss] polling closed. results now visible

I'm sympathetic to Abel, who is a sincere person making a good point, but I
have to agree with Sotiris on this one. The Poll should stand as it is. And
people should read as much or as little as they want to into it.

I've proposed that the Panel adopts the Polling Booth as an ungoing
mechanism for future polling of the membership... and by that I mean the
WHOLE membership.

So future polls will hopefully be pretty thorough.

To make this process official, the Panel has to support it (and support it
it should!). This week's use of the Poll was a de facto grassroots action,
which inevitably limits its scope, but it was necessary to break the
deadlock and inertia, and force the point. The membership clearly want the
involvement which the Polling Booth offers.

If you look at out last "official" poll (on what to call ourselves, last
autumn), 170 people voted in that.

This week, 171 people voted at the Booth, even though there were a dozen
(some quite detailed) questions, and you might have expected some people to
be put off.

What this indicates to me is that, in fact, official or unofficial, most of
the people who actively engage in our organisation once again engaged.

The "unofficial" Poll should stand (without being muddied by extensions
etc), but in future it should be made "official" and even more indicative of
member opinion.

I think any reasonable person would agree that the Poll produced very
interesting information about what our own members feel. They want elections
for a new panel, for example. They want nothing to do with ICANN's RALOs.

Even more significant, though, is the desire for an ongoing "bottom up"
democratisation of our organisation, giving our members much more
involvement.

It is essential that the present (depleted) rump of the original panel
should act on the expressed feelings of its own membership.
