Re: [atlarge-discuss] web page
Still the cart before the horse. Without a defined mission statement, how do
we know shanghai is of any importance at all?
I am in no way suggesting that Shanghai isn't important. Exactly the
opposite.
But everything from the web page and outreach and incorporation and shanghai
and domain names are all discussed without defining the mission of this
organization.
That simply means none of the work you are doing is valid until we know that
it fits within the scope of the mission this organization decides to adopt.
Those of you who were members or are members of other at large orgs or
constituencies or support orgs seem to be under the impression that all
members agree with the mission "you" see as the mission of the at large. You
seem to think it's mission has been defined already and assume all members
agree with it.
That is not open, transparent, or democratic. Do not assume that everyone
holds your point of view. Draft a mission statement for this org or put one
that has already been suggested to the membership to adopt in some fashion.
Then and only then can you be confident in moving forward with the actions
you talk about taking.
I suggested several times that a mission statement be drafted and adopted.
Some have posted suggestions. No one has presented anything formally than
can be adopted. Why is this being avoided? If a reporter asked you today,
what is the atlarge about? or what is IcannAtLarge.org about specifically,
how would you answer? What "you" think it is about. That would not
necessarily reflect what other members think it is about.
So a reporter would get a different answer from each member. That lends lots
of credibility to the org. Way to go.
