Eric, Jeff was referring to my promise to handle the membership
list according to the feedback received on my "mini-ballot".
The (admittedly limited) results from those on the list who
chose to vote said I should hold onto the files and that they
should be used (along with the FTP access information) for
the purposes of our upcoming election. Jeff (and some others)
take the view that by passing the information to the
outgoing Panel responsible for organizing the election, I
have somehow betrayed the membership.
Personally, I don't see their position as valid. I took no
oath to conduct the elections myself, nor did anyone ask me
to. The alternatives to entrusting the information to
the soon-to-be-ex-Panelists would be to
a) give it to everyone who had their own ideas about running
an election and let them fight it out amongst themselves,
or
b) throw the files away and make it impossible for anyone
to conduct a proper election, given that the group was
apparently unable to delegate anyone to receive the files
and oversee the election process.
There was some discussion a while back about the need for an
oath on the part of elected Panelists to fulfil their
mandates faithfully and place the interests of the group
above any personal agendas. As usual, people then moved on
to other subjects without reaching a decision on whether
such an oath is needed and, if so, what it should say.
